| After 31 years of Breckenridge real estate success, many wonder about the story behind Karyn Contino, also known as the “Expert in Fine Breckenridge Real Estate.” It will come as no surprise that it took many, many years to gain such recognition.
Karyn Klemow Contino grew up in upstate Pennsylvania. She attended Philadelphia College of Textiles (PTI) and Sciences, now known as Philadelphia University. Her first career was not in Real Estate; Karyn worked as a color expert in quality control for the garment industry until she opened her own retail clothing store, “The Dressing Room”, in Dresher, Pennsylvania.
Karyn met Sal Contino and they married in 1971.Together, as a new couple, they both fell in love with skiing. It all started in 1971 when they visited Aspen, Colorado with their ski group. Karyn and Sal then started making annual ski trips to Colorado, until they ventured to Colorado for their first summer vacation in 1976. Then began their plotting and planning to move their lives to a state they both knew they could not live without.
It took almost three years to liquidate their holdings (long before buy-outs became big business) and move to Summit County. In 1979 they rented a house in Wildernest, just above Silverthorne, and spent the next 18 months checking out all Colorado ski resorts. They settled in Breckenridge with three purchases of real estate, none of which turned out to be good investments. As a result, it took many years to liquidate. At that point, Karyn vowed to become a Realtor who looked out for the long-term interests of her clients. Over her past 30 years, and nearly $300 million in real estate transactions, only one of Karyn's customers has lost money. They happened to be her first buyers and, had they stuck it out one more year, they too would have profited.
In 1980 Karyn opened her own office, Executive Resorts Real Estate, Inc., which celebrates its 30th year of continuous business this summer. Sal owned Executive Resorts Inc, a rental management company, and Breckenridge Plumbing & Heating, until he sold them and retired in 2000. He can now be found on a golf course about 200 days a year, while Karyn has remained dedicated to the business she loves.
