Breckenridge Beer Fest brings beer, music to Breck April 9

Breckenridge Beer Festival
by Ian Gassman March 15, 2011

Simply put, Colorado is all about beer. From the dirty-looking Coors plant located in Golden to the bike-obsessed New Belgium brewery out of Ft. Collins, the whole state is hopped up about freshly brewed hops and barley.

Take the Breckenridge Beer Festival on April 9: Starting at 12 p.m., it’s a five-hour bacchanal dedicated to the craft of beer. And seeing as it’s hosted by Summit County’s main radio station, KSMT The Mountain, there will be some live music thrown in, just for kicks.

“We have awesome live music every year,” says Samantha Kaye, NRC Broadcasting’s festival coordinator. “Usually the music is an extra incentive to come.” This year, Elliot Brood, Something Underground, and the Holden Young Trio will play. Beyond the soundtrack, it comes down to 24 breweries strutting their stuff at Breckenridge’s Main Street Station Plaza.

Local mainstays like Breckenridge Brewery, Great Divide of Denver, Oskar Blues of Lyons, and Ska Brewing of Durango will most likely unveil their summer beers while companies like Sam Adams, Alaskan Brewing, and Deschutes Brewery will be on hand representing the bigger-name quality brews.

Getting into the event is free, but to reap any intoxicating benefits, you’ll need a $25 pass. If you want to get smashed, you can scrounge up $65 and buy a “VIP Tasting Mug” that allows you to use a commemorative glass mug for endless refills. “[Breweries] bring out their best and they bring out kegs… we just give people mugs and they keep refilling them, over and over.” Kaye said.
